Success Story

Mr. Charles M. was admitted to Maravilla Care Center in August. He had both legs amputated after suffering 4th degree burns over 22% of his body. He had a complicated hospital stay and was in a coma for 2 months and had many skin grafts, respiratory failure and kidney injury. He had a prior 20 year history of Multiple Sclerosis and had been wheelchair bound for over 10 years. On admission, he had increased confusion, profound weakness and was unable to complete any self-care tasks. His power wheelchair had been destroyed in the fire and he was unable to use a standard wheelchair due to hand burns and weakness. He received Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy to work on strengthening, endurance, transfers, high level cognitive deficits, and self-care. He received his new wheelchair and became stronger and was able to move freely around the facility. Charles was able to participate in discharge planning and was able to return home with assistance where he will continue outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy.
